Brain Heart Infusion Broth is a highly nutritious medium that can support luxuriant growth of wide variety of microorganisms. Rosnow devised in year 1919.

Composition (gr /lit):

Brain heart extract………..……17.5

Tryptone……..……………..…….10

Dextrose……………………..…….2

Sodium chloride………………..…..5

Disodium phosphate………….…2.5

pH : 7.4 ± 0.2 (at 25°C)

Directions :

Suspend 37 gr/lit in distilled water and heat to dissolve the medium completely.Disspense in to boties or tubes.

Autoclave (15 min, at 15 lbs pressure, 121ᵒc)

Brain Heart Infusion Broth

This is a highly nutritious medium  used for the cultivation of Staphylococci, Pneumococi, Meningococci, etc. Addition of 0.1% agar to the broth improves growth of microaerophilic and anaerobic microorganisms and especially suited for the cultivation of Staphylococci for the plasma coaguiase test.Addition of ascites permits the cultivation of gonococci. Cultuer media within 18 – 24 hours incubation at 37ᵒc.

Storange and shelf-life :

Store dry and keep tightly closed,store at 15-25ᵒc protect from light and the prepared medium at 2 – 8ᵒc.

Quality Control :

Appearance of Powder: Yellowish coloured, homogeneous free flowing powder.

Gelling: Broth.

Colour and Clarity: Light amber coloured, clear.
